Mother Nature has been teaching us all along.
She is not a backdrop.
She is one of our teachers.
She shows us how life moves.
Seasons change.
Tides come and go.
The moon moves through phases.
Things bloom.
Things fall away.
Storms arrive.
Landscapes change.
Life continues.
Our practice is to become still enough to notice.
There Is Movement Without Urgency
Mother Nature is always moving.
But she does not seem to panic about it.
A tree does not rush autumn.
The tide does not apologize for going out.
The moon does not become full because we are impatient.
There is movement without urgency.
And there are spaces between what was and what comes next.
The in-between is not wasted time.
Sometimes we are so focused on getting through a season that we forget:
This part of my life is still my life, too.
The Tide Will Move
The difficult tides move.
The beautiful tides move too.
Be present for both.
Low tide can uncover things that were hidden.
It can look dry and exposed.
Then the water returns.
Not necessarily to the exact same shoreline.
The landscape may have changed.
So may we.
The lesson is not that everything returns exactly as it was.
It is that life continues to move.
The Moon Has Her Own Timing
I use the full moon as a time for release.
The new moon as a time for intentions and manifestation.
That is part of my spiritual practice.
You may experience the moon differently.
That is okay.
What I notice is that she moves on her own timeline.
She does not hurry toward fullness.
She does not remain full forever.
Not everything that is coming needs to be hurried.
Look Closer
A changing leaf.
A bee moving between flowers.
New growth on something you thought was finished.
The texture of bark.
Light moving through branches.
Sometimes noticing begins with one simple question:
What else is here?
That question is not about pretending the hard thing is not happening.
It is about allowing the whole truth to exist.
This hurts.
And the sun is warm on my face.
I am grieving.
And that flower is beautiful.
I am afraid.
And I can hear birds.
More than one thing can be true at once.
The Bonus
Sometimes when I pay attention, I find something I was not looking for.
A heart-shaped leaf.
A heart-shaped rock.
A bird I have never seen before.
Some strange little detail that makes me stop.
That is what I call the bonus.
Sometimes the reward for paying attention is discovering something beautiful you would have otherwise missed.
And not everything needs to be a sign.
A cool rock can just be a cool fucking rock.
It can still make your day.
Look Closer. Look Again.
I photograph a lot of what I notice.
Sometimes I share it.
Sometimes I keep the joy for myself.
Not everything beautiful needs an audience to matter.
Photography has taught me something simple:
Look closer. Look again.
The first glance is not always the whole story.
Mother Nature Can Be Destructive Too
Mother Nature is not only sunsets and flowers.
There is fire.
Storm.
Flood.
Drought.
Hurricanes.
Entire landscapes can change.
I do not want to romanticize that.
But I do notice what happens afterward.
Sometimes new growth appears.
Sometimes the landscape becomes something entirely different.
Mother Nature does not always return to what she was. Sometimes she becomes what comes next.
That changed how I understood resilience.
Resilience is not always restoration.
Sometimes it is:
This was hard. This changed me. And life can still grow here.
New growth does not need to be rushed.
Mother Nature Is Sacred to Me
My spirituality is deeply connected to Mother Nature.
I call my higher power Source.
You may call that God.
The Universe.
Spirit.
The Divine.
Or you may not use spiritual language at all.
The name matters less to me than the connection.
I will share what I believe. You are free to discover what you believe.
Elemental Illumination is not here to tell you what something has to mean.
Your relationship with Mother Nature belongs to you.
Clarity
One of the strongest things I experience when I feel connected to Source through Mother Nature is clarity.
Not always an answer.
Sometimes simply less noise.
Clarity does not always need to be chased. Sometimes we need enough quiet to allow it to arrive.
Mother Nature does not make my decisions for me.
She helps me become quiet enough to hear myself.
And if clarity does not come?
I journal.
I wait.
I notice.
Not knowing is allowed here too.
We Come From Simplicity
This may be the thing I love most.
We come from simplicity.
Our baseline is simple.
Then life adds layers.
Expectations.
Comparison.
Responsibilities.
Loss.
Relationships.
Work.
Fear.
Other people’s opinions.
And sometimes I need to go outside and remember:
Feet on the ground.
Air in my lungs.
Sun on my face.
Breathe.
Notice.
I am here.
Mother Nature does not ask for my résumé.
She does not care how productive I was today.
She does not ask me to compare my life with anyone else’s.
There is a quieter version of us underneath all those layers.
Not a better version.
Not a more healed version.
Not necessarily the person we were before.
Simply us.
Mother Nature does not ask us to become more. Sometimes she helps us remember what remains when we need less.
So go outside.
Look closer.
Maybe you notice something enormous.
Maybe you notice yourself.
Maybe you find a heart-shaped rock.
Bonus.
